The Mark Center Post Office

(Photos Below on Mobile)

Mark Township was created in 1850. Early on, the township was intended to be named Kenton in honor of Mark Kent, who made the first improvements in the area after settling in Section 6 as a hunter and trapper. That name was ultimately rejected because a post office already carried the name Kenton, and the name Mark was agreed upon instead.

The township’s only settlement was and still is Mark Center, so named because it sits near the center of Mark Township. At its peak, the local population was about 200 to 250 people.

A post office was established at Mark Center in June 1875. Mrs. Marietta Kyle filed the application to establish the office and became the first postmistress. The building continued to house the Mark Post Office until February 14th, 1972.

In 1974, the building was donated by Carl and Dorothy Cook. It was moved to AuGlaize Village in 1976, where it has been restored to reflect how it appeared to the people of Mark Center around 1900.
